Irrigation engineering is the process of designing and installing irrigation systems. The systems provide water to plants, including crops and trees, in any climate. Irrigation engineers are often employed by government agencies, private companies or engineering firms.
The word "irrigation" is derived from the Latin "irrigation" meaning "to water". Irrigation may be practiced in a variety of ways, such as low-pressure sprinkler systems in suburban areas where pipes are run on the ground surface; pressurized pipe systems with high-pressure pumps for agricultural land; and sprinkler-type emitters that produce a wide spray pattern for lawns, golf courses, and sports fields.
