Transportation engineering is the discipline that includes roadway design and construction, traffic control, and management. The field is often considered a sub-discipline of civil engineering.

The transportation engineer considers the effects of transportation on land, air, and water environments. The transportation engineer may study vehicle or pedestrian traffic flow for urban streets; design roads for safe travel at high speeds; assess the environmental impact of new highways or rail lines; or develop blueprints for new transit systems.
