A geotechnical investigation is an investigation of the materials at or near the Earth’s surface. It is a process of exploration and examination, usually carried out to assess the suitability of a site for construction. Geotechnical investigations are typically classified as either exploratory or detailed.
Exploratory investigations are used to identify possible locations for detailed investigations and provide information about the geology at or near a site that can be used to plan further work. Detailed investigations are used to obtain data on specific parameters such as depth, stratigraphy, groundwater conditions, soil strength etc., in order to design a foundation system appropriate for the site.
